Seafood, or Blue Food, forms a crucial cornerstone of global food supply. To maintain this vital role into the far future - and, indeed, to help maintain national and international food security - the industry is making strides to become increasingly sustainable. To bring this into focus, our second Blue Food event will examine driving positive change in the industry, aligning with the sustainability objective outlined in the Fisheries Act 2020.
Building on the foundations laid in our first Blue Food event, we will discuss challenges and opportunities for the industry associated with transitioning to more sustainable fishing practices, specifically focusing on the fishing fleet’s carbon emissions and plastic usage. Featuring case studies, community-driven endeavours, and scientific research, speakers will discuss low emission fishing vessels, innovative fishing gear designs, and pioneering projects aiming to reduce plastic use across the supply chain. Together, these discussions contribute to a vision of a more sustainable fishing industry, aligning with government goals for the sector.
This is the second of three events exploring Blue Food. The final event in the series will explore ways to incorporate ecosystem-based fisheries management into fisheries policy, opportunities for co-management with the industry, and how resultant seafood products can effectively reach consumers. More details will be announced in due course.
