Seafood - or ‘Blue Food’ - plays a central role in global food security, livelihoods, economies, and cultural heritage. The publication of the UK Government Food Strategy in 2022 recognises this, laying out the importance of food systems in promoting a thriving UK economy, boosting health and wellbeing and increasing food security. However, the role of fisheries and seafood in delivering these benefits is not yet fully defined. Similarly, while the health benefits of eating seafood are well recognised, and the Strategy introduces policy initiatives to promote sustainable, resilient, healthy and affordable food systems, knowledge gaps remain on the wider benefits seafood consumption could provide. These include the potential for tackling climate change and addressing biodiversity loss, as well as the associated effects these benefits would have on people and communities.
This event is the first in a three-part series examining seafood as a solution to the economic, environmental and societal challenges posed by food production. Reflecting on the UK Government Food Strategy and its core objective “To deliver a sustainable, nature positive, affordable food system” this initial event will discuss how fisheries and seafood can contribute to a ‘food-revolution’. Our speakers will explore how to put fishing on the food agenda, challenges faced by the fishing industry regarding sustainability and affordability, and the potential for seafood to promote a nature-positive UK, minimising the environmental, social and economic footprint of food in the UK.
The two subsequent events in the series will take a deeper dive into specific aspects of sustainable seafood production, with further detail to be shared in due course.
