Many organisations have responded to the ongoing coronavirus crisis by highlighting a number of new and existing resources for the seafood industry. The APPG Secretariat has compiled some of the most useful.
The Marine Management Organisation has put together a table giving details on support available for the fishing industry. It includes information on claiming income support and on welfare initiatives available for the fishing community. This is one of the most comprehensive sources of information for fishing businesses seeking advice during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Seafish are also keeping the industry informed and updated on support available. This includes a breakdown of resources available in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The resources below supplement those above.
Selling direct
Seafish and Mindfully Wired Communications have put together guides on selling seafood directly to consumers for England and Scotland. They also include posters and graphics that sellers can use to promote their products.
The Marine Management Organisation has answered FAQs related to selling fish directly to the public and businesses.
Travel
Seafish are issuing ‘critical worker certificates’ to vessel owners, skippers and fishermen, with the aim of easing their travel under social distancing measures.
Income support
The NFFO has given guidance on the government’s self-employment income support scheme.
Home delivery
For consumers, Seafish’s Fish is the Dish have also released details of specialist seafood suppliers that can home deliver.
Fish on Friday also has a database that consumers can use to find local fishmongers, fishermen and fish merchants.
We will be continuing to add to this resource as the situation develops. If you are aware of additional advice for the fishing industry, contact the APPG on Fisheries Secretariat at secretariat@fisheriesappg.org.
