Fisheries and Protected Areas

Effective collaboration between the fishing industry and conservation efforts is vital for sustaining healthy fish stocks. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are dedicated to fulfilling sustainable management and conservation goals, including the support of ecosystem services and cultural values. However, their implementation has the potential for friction with the fishing industry. There is a need to explore how MPAs can coexist alongside fisheries, with the aim of bringing benefits to all. Scientific evidence, bespoke management measures, and inclusive dialogue all have a role to play.

This event will discuss how constructive relationships can be formed between the fishing industry and those establishing and enforcing protected areas. A selection of expert speakers will discuss how MPAs and other protective measures can be designed and operated in a way that supports sustainable fishing efforts and the fishermen that depend upon them.
