Aquaculture - the farming of fish, invertebrates, and plants in aquatic systems - is becoming an increasingly important source of seafood in the UK. Different segments of the aquaculture sector face different but overlapping sets of challenges, including competition for space and resources, complex legislation, limited demand from UK consumers, environmental issues such as water quality, and lack of access to resources. However, the sector also has the potential to thrive and diversify, become a core part of the UK’s ‘blue economy’, and make a nutritious and sustainable contribution to seafood consumption.
In collaboration with Seafood 2040, who released the English Aquaculture Strategy last year, the APPG on Fisheries is delighted to host this event, which will investigate insights from aquaculture from across the UK. Bringing together parliamentarians, policymakers, and sector professionals, the session will explore how the sector can realise its potential in an effective and sustainable manner, and encourage discussion on next steps for bringing this transformation about.
