There are almost 12,000 fishermen active in the UK, but the working population is ageing: the average vessel owner is now around 50 years old. Recruitment of young people remains low. This highlights the need for the industry to turn its focus towards presenting fishing as a rewarding career path for young people.
Our inaugural meeting of 2019 discussed and investigated potential solutions to the issue of recruiting young people into the fishing industry. Discussions covered how best to utilise support systems for fishermen, how to improve resilience to policy changes, and the need for staying abreast of technological advances, as well as many other topics.
A report on outcomes of the event is now available.
