Fishing in a Changing Seascape

Demand for space among the UK’s marine users is growing, as the offshore wind and aquaculture industries expand and more areas are designated with protected status. An effective and holistic marine spatial planning process is becoming an urgent priority for UK waters, and efforts from relevant authorities and stakeholders are working to make this a reality.

However, increased demand for marine space has negatively impacted the UK fishing industry, who have historically had access to the majority of UK waters but now find themselves consigned to smaller or less productive areas. Many industry members are seeking a more inclusive and collaborative approach to marine planning that recognises the fishing industry’s importance to food security and livelihoods, alongside other priorities.

This event takes a different approach to the APPG’s normal events, focusing on enhanced opportunities for discussion and engagement surrounding the integration of marine spatial planning and fishing including opportunities for support from policy and Parliament. While most attendees will be virtual, Parliamentarians will get involved in discussions directly from a meeting room in Westminster. This event is free and open to everyone - we especially welcome members of the fishing industry, policymakers, and other marine users (offshore wind, aquaculture, etc). Attendees are encouraged to participate in discussions and approach the meeting with constructive ideas.
