Staying Safe at Sea

Commercial fishing is the most dangerous profession in the UK. Fishermen face a risk of fatality over six times higher than the most dangerous land-based industry. Going overboard, flooding and capsizing are the leading causes of fishing fatalities. Making fishing as safe as possible is therefore a top priority.

There are numerous approaches to improving fishing safety. Legislation, such as ILO 188, provides a framework for safety standards. Communication and education, such as through training or outreach campaigns, also have a key part to play. Improvements to technology can also bring big benefits for safety, such as through making fishing vessels more stable or making it easier to find fishermen that have gone overboard.

This event heard from a diverse array of voices from around the UK that are helping to improve fishing safety. Presentations were followed by questions to the panel and an inclusive discussion.
